A Shocking Suicide in Powers Street.
Albert T. Ostrander Rises Early and Cuts His Throat -- The Body Discovered by His Wife -- The Act Attributed to Mental Abberation.
Albert Romaine Ostrander, aged 32 years, 9 months and 29 days, committed suicide about 4:30 o'clock yesterday morning, on the second floor of No. 47 Powers street, at the house of Mr. E. Thomas, where he has resided during the past three years, with his wife, Mrs. Mary Ostrander. The act was committed under insane impulse, Ostrander having been suffering from cerebral trouble during the past two years. The cause of the malady is attributed to excessive strain on the mind from application to his business, that of weigher in Havemeyer & Elder's sugar rednery [sic]. He was, besides, an ardent lover of music, and such little time he had left him from his regular business he devoted laboriously to the study of music. He had been for over two years leader of the choir of the Methodist Episcopal church, corner of Twelfth street and Union avenue, but about four months ago his mental disturbance obliged him to relinquish his connection with the church choir and confine himself to his business in the surgar refinery.
Mrs. Ostrander has felt very uneasy latterly in regard to her husband, and did everything in her power to amuse his mind. He seemed to suspect himself as verging toward insanity, of which he seemed to have a perfect horror.
About four weeks ago, in order to divert his mind, Mrs. Ostrander took him to visit the house of his brother in law, Mr. McFarlane, in Massachusetts. They returned after a week, but the morbid disposition of Mr. Ostrander's mind seemed to have undergone no change for the better.
About 4 o'clock yesterday morning, he rose and went into the back room. His wife not apprehending that he meditated any design on his own life, was not alarmed by the fact. Mrs. Margaret McFarlane, mother of Mrs. Ostrander, who slept in the room off the back room, some time afterward heard a peculiar sound like a death rattle, rose and on going into the room to see what was the matter, found Ostrander lying on the floor dead. He was enveloped in a bed cover and one hand holding a razor rested near the right side of his throat. The throat presented a ghastly gash, the blood from which had saturated the bed cover. He had it appears, after cuting his throat placed himself with his face downward, on a piece of oilcloth in front of the stove. No blood was seen outside of the oil, cloth.
Dr. George Newman, of Lorimer street, was instantly summoned, but the unfortunate man was beyond the power of science to revive. Coroner A. J. Hesse, on being notified, arrived about 9 o'clock and ascertained that the right jugular vein and carotid artery had been severed.
A jury having been empanelled, the Coroner held an inquest, which resulted in the verdict that deceased died of hemorrhage, caused by his cutting his throat with a razor. Deceased was a man of strictly temperate habits and, as his brother in law observed, hardly knew what liquor was.
He was a member of the North Fifth street Methodist Church some three years ago, when he led the choir there. Latterly he belonged to the M. E. Church, corner of Twelfth and South Third streets.

DEATH CALLS REV. AMBROSE OSTRANDER
Funeral services for Rev. Ambrose Ostrander, 85, native of New York, who died Monday night, were held yesterday at Asbury Methodist Church, Rev. S. Hamrick officiating.
Interment followed at Idlewilde cemetery. C.C. Anderson directed the funeral.
Mr. Ostrander, who retired from active ministry while in the Iowa conference, moved here with his wife 23 years ago. Mrs. Ostrander died last year. No known relatives survive.

ARTHUR C. OSTRANDER
Of 316 2nd Ave., died at 5:03 a.m. today, Aug. 2, 1976, at Mercy Hospital, where he was admitted July 20. Mr. Ostrander retired Jan. 5, 1968, from the
Pennsylvania Railroad as a car inspector with 47 years' service.
He was born Jan. 9, 1904, in Bellefonte, a son of Oscar and Bessie (McKinley) Ostrander, and married Catharine N. Burns, who died March 25, 1972. Surviving are four children, Arthur C. Jr. of Huntingdon and David S., Mrs. Dorothy I. Edmundson and Ormond O. of Altoona; 11 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, a great-great-grandchild and seven brothers and sisters, Joseph, Malcolm and Betty of Altoona, Guy of Lewistown, Mrs. Louise Crumm of York, Mrs. Beatrice Rush of Bellefonte and Mrs. Leah Wietrick of Denver, Colo. Mr. Ostrander was a member of the Trinity United Church of Christ, Altoona.

Passed away early Tuesday, August 3, 1999, at her home after a lengthy illness.
Age 65 years. Betty J. Ostrander was born October 13, 1933 in Chesaning, the daughter of the late Roy and Dorothy (Newman) Ostrander.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Merrill and its Altar Society. She was an active member of the League of Catholic Women, holding various offices.
She married Joseph R. Reiber October 27, 1951; he survives her. She also leaves three daughters, five sons and their spouses, Mary Ann and Richard Burtch, Brant; Deborah and Michael Abraham, Bad Axe; Dave and Diane Reiber, Merrill; Ron and Theresa Reiber, St. Charles; Mark and Lou Reiber, Merrill; Christine and James Foor, Wheeler; Steven and Janette Reiber, Breckenridge; Robert and Leslie Reiber, Merrill. Another daughter, Rita Smith, predeceased her. She also leaves a son- in-law, David Smith, Hemlock; 22 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; several step grandchildren and their families; four brothers and one sister, James, Ben, Don and Walt Ostrander and Nancy Gorman; many nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Mass of Christian Burial will take place 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 6, 1999 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Merrill.

HEMET, Calif. -- Billy Ostrander Jr., 82, died Friday, Sept. 19, 2003, at his home in Hemet, Calif.
Services will be at a later date in California.
Mr. Ostrander was cremated.
Mr. Ostrander was born April 11, 1921, in Belgrade to William Pell and Minnie May Ostrander.
Survivors of the immediate family include his wife, LaDene Ostrander of Hemet; two sons Gary Ostrander of Fort Mojave, Ariz., and Allen Ostrander of Laverne, Calif.; and three brothers, Claire Ostrander of Dickson, Tenn., and Dale Ostrander and Joy Ostrander, both of Tacoma, Wash.
Also surviving are five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Leo, Vern, Orval and Kenneth; and two sisters, Zella Schoening and Emma Tschudin. [Contributed by Clifford Lamere]

Burton Ostrander, 86, of 1659 Orchard Road, Mt. Jackson, died Friday, Dec. 15, 2000, in Rose Hill Nursing Home, Berryville.
Mr. Ostrander was born Dec. 18, 1914, in Philadelphia, the son of Ruben and Marie Ostrander. He was a salesman for Sun Beam Appliances and had worked for James Madison University.
He was a Navy veteran of World War II .
He was a member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Mt. Jackson and Elks Lodge 867 of Winchester. He was past general manager of the New Market Rebels.
A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Hudson Cross Roads Cemetery, with the Rev. William Pendleton officiating.
Memorials may be made to a favorite charity.
Dellinger Funeral Home, Mt. Jackson, is handling arrangements.

AVOCA -- Carl W. Ostrander, 74, of 53 Chase St., died Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002, at home.
He worked at the Bath VA Medical Center.
Survivors include his wife, Margelia Wightman Ostrander; three sons, Richard Ostrander of North Syracuse, Terry Ostrander of Avoca, Mark Ostrander of Bath; a daughter, Janice Balistreri of Bath; a brother, Lawrence Ostrander of Avoca; a sister, Joyce Cranmer of Kanona.
There will be no calling hours. Services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Avoca United Methodist Church, the Rev. Rene Carrillo officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Avoca.

AVOCA -- Carl W. Ostrander, 74, died late Saturday evening (Dec. 14, 2002) at his home at 53 Chase St., after a long illness.
Born in Avoca on July 2, 1928, he was a son of the late Wendel and Olive Wright Ostrander.
A life long resident of Avoca, Carl attended school in Avoca and was employed at the Bath V.A. Medical Center.
He was a former member of the Avoca United Methodist Church, the Avoca Lions Club, the Avoca Hose Company #1, the Avoca Ambulance Corps and the Avoca Rod and Gun Club.
Carl was a pilot of a single engine plane and a ham radio operator.
His family includes his wife, the former Margelia Wightman, who he married at the Avoca United Methodist Church on July 30, 1949; his three sons, Richard (Nora) Ostrander of North Syracuse, Terry Ostrander of Avoca and Mark (Cindy) Ostrander of Bath; his daughter, Janice (Leo) Balistreri of Bath; his seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; his brother, Lawrence (Ann) Ostrander of Avoca; his sister, Joyce Cranmer of Kanona; also his nieces and nephews.
There will be no calling hours. A service in memory of Carl will be held at 3 p.m. today at the Avoca United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Rene Carrillo officiating. Interment will be in Valley View Cemetery, Avoca.

She was born Sept. 16, 1902, in Altoona, a daughter of William T. and Emma (Weyandt) Burns, and May 26, 1921, in the Trinity Reformed Church was married to Arthur C. Ostrander by the Rev. Roy Runkle. Surviving are her husband, four children, Mrs. Dorothy J. Edmundson, David S. and Ormond O. of Altoona and Arthur C. Jr. of Huntingdon; 10 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and a brother, Clyde of Altoona.
Mrs. Ostrander was a member of the Trinity United Church of Christ, the John Wolf Chapter of War Mothers and the Delphi Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star.

Charles grew up in Dallas until age 16, when he moved to San Angelo, where he attended high school and later, in 1959, met and married Marquita. He worked for many years at Hudiburg Chevrolet, Texas Motors Ford and Hillard Auto.
Charles loved his family and his devoted dog, Tex. He will be greatly missed by those who loved him.
Survivors: Marquita Ostrander; sons, Mark, James, David and Daniel Ostrander; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

JANESVILLE/EVANSVILLE -- Clarence G. Ostrander of Janesville, Wisconsin passed on peacefully Christmas Eve, December 24, 2003 with family present, at River Falls Hospital in River Falls, Wisconsin. He was 93.
Clarence was born on September 24, 1910 to Katherine Zimmerman and General Ostrander in Oakley, Wisconsin. One of seven children, he spent his childhood in the area until the family scattered during the depression.
He spent his youth in the Dakotas, living with an older brother, and his teen years in New York, with another brother. Soon after, he left for Detroit and started work as a machinist for Chrysler. During this time, he began to develop his passion for flying. Clarence went on to obtain his pilot's license, and eventually became an expert pilot, widely respected in the community. During these early years, he had the opportunity to meet Amelia Earhart, Eddy Rickenbacher, Ralph Stinson, Wiley Post and other early pioneers of that barnstorming era. He returned to the Juda area where he began his career in farming. He worked on several farms in the Juda area and eventually became an owner-operator of a dairy farm near Footville. He married Dora Marie Schwartzlow in 1937, his wife of forty-seven years until her passing in 1984. Clarence was a life-long resident of the Footville/Center Township area where they farmed for 42 years. He was an active member in the Farm Bureau Association and the school board for West Center School. Much of his time was devoted to the Footville Methodist Church, where he served on the board of directors for many years. Throughout his career, he managed to combine farming with his true love of flying. As Captain in the Civil Air Patrol, he flew numerous search and rescue missions. He piloted his plane into several EAA air shows in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. To the joy of many children, he flew Santa into the Town of Footville.
Other interests were a life long enjoyment of family, hunting, photography, and later in life, golf and woodworking. He was a man of few words, but for all who knew him, there was always an expression, a chuckle, a smile, a pause worth a thousand words. He was a man of character, strength, and integrity. He was of big heart and always generous in his giving to others throughout his life, helping many in need along the way, always lending a helping hand wherever he could. He lived a rich life and with his gentle demure touched the hearts of many. He was a loving father, grandfather and uncle. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, his five brothers, one who was his twin , a sister, and a grandson, Kurt.
He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Richlynn Ostrander, River Falls; Kenneth and Roberta Ostrander, McFarland; daughter and son-in-law, Judy and David Baum, Sanibel Island, Florida; three grandsons; one step-grandson; one granddaughter, three step-granddaughters, two great grandsons, and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 12:00 noon on Friday, January 2, 2004 at Newcomer-Silverthorn Funeral Home in Orfordville. Visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. until 12:00 noon at the funeral home on Friday. Burial will be in Milton Lawns Memorial Park, Janesville.

Mr. Comstock died July 17, 1941. On August 7, 1943 she married Stanley Thompson in East Greenbush, NY. Mr. Thompson died April 3, 1993.
Mrs. Thompson started her employment working at General Electric in Schenectady from 1941 through 1943. After moving to Canton, she was employed at Canton Central School as a Cafeteria worker from 1956-1963. From 1956-1983 as a well-known cake decorator, she touched the hearts of many people making wedding and birthday cakes. She was an active member of the Canton United Methodist Church and was part of the Canton United Methodist Church Choir for nearly 40 years. [Contributed by Clifford Lamere]

Danuel Chancy Ostrander, oldest son of John T. and Mary Ostrander, was born November 26, 1849, in Gorham township, Ohio, and died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Lewis Hodge, in Jackson, Michigan, April 11, 1918, aged sixty-eight years, four months and fifteen days. On June 28, 1889, he was married to Anna Cora Finn. All of their wedded life was spent in the vicinity of Morenci, Michigan, until the death of his wife October 1, 1901. To this union were born three daughters,—Mrs. Lewis Hodge of Jackson, Michigan; Mrs. Earl Peck of Detroit, Michigan; and Lena Ezoa who died in her infancy. He is also survived by one brother and four sisters as follows: Mr. Alonzo Ostrander, whereabouts unknown; Mrs. Edward Ortt of Morenci, Michgian; Mrs. Isaac Bender of Waldron, Michigan; Mrs. Edward Randolf of Waldron, Michigan; and Mrs. Verne Wood of Milan, Michigan; also two granddaughters and other relatives and friends.
The funeral was held in the United Brethren church in Morenci, Michigan, conducted by the writer assisted by Rev. Oliver Hanna. Interment in the cemetery near Morenci, Michigan.

CHADRON -- Darleen Ostrander, 71, of Chadron died Friday, May 26, 2001, at Rapid City Regional Hospital. She was born June 16, 1929 at Gregory, S.D. Her parents were Glenn and Wilma Soper.
She was married to H.E. "Ozzie" Ostrander on June 20, 1948. She was a lifetime member of the United Methodist Church, Past Honored Queen of the Order of Jobs Daughters, a member of the Chadron Woman's Club, and an active member of the R.S.V.P Volunteer Program.
She is survived by her husband Ozzie Ostrander of Chadron. She also is survived by one brother, Dick Soper of Golden, Colo.
Mrs. Ostrander's funeral will be at 2 p.m., Tuesday, May 29 at the United Methodist Church at Chadron, with Rev. K.F. Kaleuati officiating. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery. Chamberlain Chapel of Chadron is in charge of arrangements.

PITTSFIELD -- Deena K. Ostrander, 53, of 25 Newell St. died Friday at home after a long illness.
Born in Pittsfield on April 25, 1951, daughter of Adele L. Cote Ostrander and the late Harry R. Ostrander, she attended Notre Dame School and graduated from St. Joseph's High School. She also received an associate degree in liberal arts from Berkshire Community College.
At the time of her death, Ms. Ostrander was employed by Price Chopper in Pittsfield in the bakery department and by Friendly's in Lenox.
Earlier, while living in Virginia, she was employed by Garden View Nursery in Fredericksburg and by Blockbuster Video.
She attended Notre Dame Church and enjoyed reading, gardening and the companionship of her two cats.
Besides her mother, she leaves two sons, Andrew Pickerel of Fredericksburg, Va., and Matthew Pickerel of Washington, D.C.; a daughter, Amanda Pickerel of Burke, Va., and four sisters, Elise Ostrander of Dublin, Calif., Lauri Klefos of Concord, N.H., Joellyn Ostrander of Alexandria, Va., and Paula Morris of Huber Heights, Ohio.

She made Fredericksburg her home for more than 10 years and was a former member of St. Mary Catholic Church.
Ms. Ostrander was preceded in death by her father, Harry R. Ostrander. In addition to her children, she is survived by her mother, Adele Ostrander of Arlington; and her sisters, Joeyln, Elise, Laurie and Paula Jean. Services will be held Thursday, Aug. 26, in Pittsfield, Mass.

Delilah (Ostrander) Pitts

Miss Delilah Ostrander was born in
Tompkins County, New York on May 24, 1831. She went with her parents to Illinois
in her early girlhood and there married to J.L. Pitts February 5, 1848. To
them were born four sons and three daughters; three sons survive them. In
1854 she went with her husband to Iowa and in 1868 they went to Kansas stopping
first in Ottawa county and in 1881 come to Elk county, lived on a farm near
Upalo until 1897, when they moved to Longton. Mr. Pitts died in 1902.
Mrs. Pitts was a member of the M.E. Church and was a
very zealous christian. Her death occured Tuesday, March 12, 1912. Funeral
services were held at the M.E. church by Rev. E.N. Skinner, Friday, March 15,
and the body laid beside that of her husband in the Upalo cemetery.
Many loving friends join her children and grandchildren

Donald Ostrander dies at 51
Donald Ostrander, of Chesterton, died due to pancreatic cancer Friday, March 14, 2003 at V.N.A. Horton Hospice Center, Valparaiso. He was 51.
He was born November 30, 1951 in Washington, Pennsylvania, the son of William James and Martha Ann (Charney) Ostrander, who preceded him in death.
On August 11, 1984 in Chesterton, he married Susan Lomas, who survives in Chesterton.
He is also survived by two sons, Joseph William (age 11) and Donald Robert (Tracy) Ostrander of Hobart; four daughters, Colleen Diane (age 16), Danielle Michelle (14), Cristi Lin (Joseph) Subart of Hobart and Jaime Lyn (Robert) Holman of Fayetteville, Tenn.; four brothers, Albert (Marge) Ostrander, of Pa., Eugene (Belinda) Ostrander, of Pa., Kenneth Ostrander of Arizona, and Raymond (Melinda) Ostrander, Lake Station, Ind.; five sisters, Dorothy (Ted) Weaver of Pa., Mary Jane (Lawrence) Wheeler of Lake Station, Barbara Ward of Md., LaVerna (Fred) Drabeck of Pa., Martha (George) Baker of Md. and Darlene (Herb) Dicks of Pa; 10 grandchildren, Michael and Jaclin Owen (Subart), Stephanie, Delaney, Skylar and Victoria Subart, David Hailey, Abbye Ostrander and Amberlyn Holman.
He was a Chesterton resident for 21 years and was employed for 33 years at Bethlehem Steel where he was a crane operator and scarfer. He was a graduate of River Forest High School. He was involved in coaching and umpiring for the boys and girls State Park Little League. He was manager of girls fast pitch softball (Indiana Fireballs). He was a member of St. Patrick Church. He retired in Oct. 2002 due to illness.
A Mass of Christian Burial, Father James Meade officiating, is scheduled at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 18 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 638 N. Calumet Rd., Chesterton. Interment will be at Graceland Cemetery, Valparaiso.
Visitation is scheduled from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Monday, with a family memorial service at 7 p.m., at Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home, 517 Broadway, Chesterton.
Memorials may be made to the Ostrander Family Fund at any First National Bank location.

Dorothy E. Ostrander, 84, a lifelong resident of East Brady, died at 9:55 a.m. Sunday, July 25, 2004, at her residence following an extended illness.
Born July 13, 1920, in East Brady, she was the daughter of Lee M. and Josephine Hohn White.
She was a 1937 graduate of the former East Brady High School.
Mrs. Ostrander was extremely involved with the Borough of East Brady until ill health prevented her participation.
She was a member of the East Brady United Methodist Church and was an active member of the ladies auxiliaries of the local veterans organizations.
Mrs. Ostrander was a charter member and longtime treasurer of the Hoffman Medical Center Board as well as a member of the Hoffman Housing Board (East Brady Heights), both of East Brady. She also served many years on the East Brady Borough Council until ill health prevented her attendance.
For many years, she served on the Board of Assistance for Clarion County and was a former board member of the Clarion Hospital.
Mrs. Ostrander was a member of the Clarion County Garden Cub, the Clarion County Historical Society and the Brady's Bend Historical Society.
Recognizing the danger of truck traffic losing their brakes entering East Brady on the long steep hill from the Rimersburg direction, she and her late husband, Raymond, arranged with PennDOT to build a siding for trucks to come to a complete stop before preceding down into East Brady. The land for the siding was donated by the Ostranders for this purpose.
When the land was needed to build the new fire hall for the borough, she and her husband again donated the lot for the existing structure with the usual $1 exchange between parties for such transactions.
She was married May 10, 1940, to Raymond L. Ostrander, who died Dec. 11, 2003.
Surviving are two sons, Ray Lee Ostrander of Lancaster and Randy Ostrander of East Brady; and three grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Richard White.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in the Charles B. Buechele Funeral Home, Fourth Street, East Brady.
A private funeral service and burial will follow at the family's request.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the Clarion-Forest Hospice, Clarion, 16214.

The whole community was shocked and saddened yesterday morning when the sudden death of Edgar F. Ostrander became generally known. Mr. Ostrander had suffered from a weak heart for a long time, but was feeling all right Tuesday evening after dinner and came down town to listen to the elecion returns, leaving the Northeastern Iowa Power Company's office but a little while before his body was discovered on the east side of the alley back of the William Heiserman residence and just across the street from the Ostrander home on Maple Avenue. Mr. Ostrander must have been taken suddenly and suffered intensely as neighbors heard an unusual sound and went out to investigate, finding his body as above stated. Drs. King and Williamson were both called but life was extinct. The body was taken to his home where Mrs. Ostrander had been awaiting her husband's return. On account of its being election night, most of the neighbors were still up and came at once to render any assistance possible to the bereaved wife. Their two sons, Clyde and Harold, who live near Fayette and in Alpha respectively, were notified immediately and in a very short time were with their mother.
Edgar F. Ostrander was born in Jefferson County, Wisconsin, January 9, 1856, being the son of Leander and Mary Ostrander, both natives of New York. The early life of Mr. Ostrander was spent in Wisconsin and on the home farm in Bethel township, and his educational training embraced a knowledge of the branches taught in the public schools. He was reared to agricultural pursuits and on arriving at the age of young manhood selected farming for his vocation. In 1906 he sold his farm and moved to West Union, where they have since made their home. Mr. Ostrander for a time operated the garage now occupied by the Field-Warren Motor Company. He served as director of the Alpha creamery, and was stockholder in the Alpha telephone company, while living in Bethel township. He also served his community as school director and assessor and was instrumental in establishing the Alpha Methodist church and always manifested a lively interest in religious work and all enterprises having for their object the material, social, and moral good of his fellow men.
Mr. Ostrander was married in 1876 to Margaret Jennie Rogers of Fort Atkinson and their home life was always most happy. To them were born four children, Clyde Elverton of near Fayette, Clinton R. of Groton, South Dakota, Elton, who died in infancy, and Harold, who lives at Alpha.
The hour of the funeral had not been set as the Union goes to press, on account of the son in South Dakota who is expected to reach West Union today. The service will be held some time tomorrow and at the M.E. church.

A retired chief PBX operator for a hospital, she was a 48-year resident of Las Vegas and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
She is survived by her daughters, Frances Ream of Henderson, Betty Johnson of Muncie, Ind., and Mary Sawyer of Westland, Mich.; nine grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Mr. Ostrander, born January 23, 1862, in Orange county, New York, had lived in Oregon 47 years, making his home in
Portland and Salem. He retired nine years ago.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. T.J. Starker, Corvallis, and Mrs. L.L. Leach, Seattle, Wash., and three sons, S.E.
Ostrander, San Francisco, Calif., and Aubrey and Donald, of Seattle, all with the railroads.
The funeral service is to be at 3:30 o'clock Monday afternoon in the chapel of the Portland Crematorium.

EDWARD OSTRANDER served Oregon faithfully and competently as public service commissioner; he was elected in 1924
after having been secretary of the commission; his election terminated the wild rule by a majority who had been chosen in a
recall election but whose radicalism proved impossible of practical fulfilment and made the commission ridiculous before
the state. Ostrander earlier had been a rate expert of standing, and was one of the few qualified experienced men elected in
Oregon to a public office the duties of which involved expert experience. As commissioner Ostrander left behind him a
record of skilful [sic] service and an unstained name; his death, in a ripe age, terminated a career distinguished by honor and by
notable efficiency in public service.

Plattsburgh — Elizabeth Ostrander Eells, 94, of Plattsburgh, died Monday, March 6, 2000, at the Meadowbrook Nursing Home in Plattsburgh.
She was born in Morrisonville on Jan. 17, 1906, daughter of Leslie and Delia (Sullivan) Ostrander.
Elizabeth was a 1924 graduate of Port Henry High School. Following graduation, she was employed by the Army Corps of Engineers at the Plattsburgh Army Post and then the Department of Motor Vehicles. On Nov. 20, 1929, she married Curtis H. Eells.
In 1946, she and her husband founded Eells Motors, a Nash dealership that subsequently became Rambler and then American Motors. In 1970, the Eells took on the Datsun franchise. Both Mr. and Mrs. Eells retired in 1978.
Mrs. Eells is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Rose Eells of Albany; a daughter and son-in-law, Margaret and Clement Jackson of Plattsburgh; a son-in-law, Albert Otto of Fountain Valley, Calif.; six grandchildren, John Eells, Peter Eells, Susan Moore, Christopher Jackson, Elizabeth Stoffel and Richard Otto; ten great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Eells was predeceased by her husband of fifty-six years in 1985; a daughter, Elizabeth Otto in 1978; and a granddaughter, Elizabeth Jackson, in 1974.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 10 a.m. from St. John's Church in Plattsburgh. Burial will be later in the year in Old Peru Cemetery in Peru.
Donations may be made in her memory to the Elizabeth Jackson Scholarship Fund, 71 Prospect Ave., Plattsburgh, N.Y. 12901.
Arrangements are with the Brown Funeral Home in Plattsburgh.

MRS. A. OSTRANDER BURIED SUNDAY
Mrs. A. Ostrander, aged 64, native of Iowa and wife of
a pioneer Methodist minister, died at her Heights home Friday night. Funeral
services were held from the home Saturday, Rev. C.R. Delepone officiating.
Interment followed at Idlewilde cemetery. C.C. Anderson directed the funeral.
Mrs. Ostrander, who was devoted the past several years
to the care of her husband, an invalid, fell over a wrinkled rug corner several
weeks ago, severely breaking an arm. The shock resulted in illness that caused
her death.
Elizabeth Knight was born in Iowa August 4, 1859. Her

MRS. ELIZABETH OSTRANDER
Elizabeth Knight was born nearly 65 years ago in Iowa
on August 4, 1859. Her parents were devout Christians, and she herself not only

Christian life. At the age of 18 she was married to Mr. Ostrander, and a few
years after, when Mr. Ostrander was called to the ministry of the Gospel, shared
with him the busy, self-sacrificing and eventful life of a successful pioneer
Methodist preacher. Their united life was very happy, each seeking the happiness
of the other in the faithful discharge of the duties which God called on them to
enter in.
For the past 18 years of her life, Mrs. Ostrander lived
in the Hood River valley and after 47 years of happy married life, she fell
asleep last Friday, May 30, at the age of 64 years, 9 months and 26 days. She
was ready to go, glad to be with Jesus, her only grief being to leave her aged
husband, 83 years old, alone, grieving for the departure of his faithful

BRANDON - Elizabeth Ann Melton, 81, died Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2004, at Hospice in Ridgeland. A native of Tennessee, she was a seamstress and the widow of James J. Melton of Houston.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Houston Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Houston Cemetery.
Survivors include two sons, Charles E. Ostrander of Brandon and Conley R. Ostrander of Pearl; a sister, Helen Miles of Citrus Heights, Calif.; sisters and brothers-in-law, Larry and Agnes Williams of Houston, Robert Melton, Betty Thompson and Ruth Bruffey; seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren.

Ella Virgirene Ostrander was born June 12, 1920 on a farm near Dallas Center, Iowa. She was the daughter of John Malone and Sarilla Weber Malone. Virgirene was raised in the Dallas Center area and attended school there. Following her graduation from Dallas Center High School, Virgirene worked for several families in Dallas Center.
On June 12, 1939, Virgirene was united in marriage to William Wayne Ostrander at Northwood, Iowa. During World War II, Virgirene worked with her husband at the Ordinance Plant in Ankeny.
Virgirene and Wayne became the parents of four children. Through the years, the couple lived and farmed in several locations, including Dallas Center, Booneville, Jamaica, Grand Junction, and Jefferson.
Virgirene loved to cook, can foods, grow flowers and work in the garden. She enjoyed hosting family get-togethers.
Virgirene died June 28, 2004 at her home in rural Jefferson. She was 84 years of age. Preceding her in death were her parents; two brothers: Frank and Patrick Malone, and a son-in-law, Darrell Clark.
Survivors include her husband, Wayne of Jefferson; one daughter, Deanna Clark of Moorland, IA; three sons: Dennis Ostrander and his wife Diane of Jefferson, IA; Jerry Ostrander and his wife Marlys of Jefferson, IA; and Kevin Ostrander and his wife Jacalyn of Grand Junction, IA; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two brothers: John Malone of Ankeny, IA and Dean Malone of Dallas Center, IA.

EVANSDALE [Iowa] -- Ellis A. "Lanky" Ostrander, 67, of Evansdale, died Monday, April 17, at Allen Hospital of natural causes.
He was born Sept. 25, 1932, in rural Fayette County, the son of Jesse and Margaret Wroe Ostrander. He married Lucille Marie McGill Jan. 21, 1956, in Cedar Falls.
Mr. Ostrander was a roofer and masonry worker for many years in the Waterloo and California areas. Survived by: his wife of Bakersfield, Calif.; a son, Terry of Bakersfield; three daughters, Cindy Ostrander of Waterloo, and Cynthia Miller and Wendy Ostrander, both of Bakersfield; 10 grandchildren; and a brother, Bobby of Sacramento.
Preceded in death by: two brothers, Harold and Jim.
Services: 3 p.m. Monday at the Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street, with burial in Poyner Township Cemetery, both in Waterloo. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

VALATIE [NY] -- Esther L. Potter Ostrander, 97, formerly of Brookview Road, Castleton, died Sunday, March 14, 2004 at Barnwell Nursing Home. Born in Littleton, N.H., she was a lifelong resident of Brookview, N.Y. Esther will be fondly remembered for her great love of the outdoors. She was an avid gardener and was a fixture along Brookview Road, tending her gardens there for over 60 years. Predeceased by her husband, Gustin; she is survived by her children, Gustin Ostrander (Marga) and James Ostrander (Huguette) of Castleton, Jeanette Patrie (Lewis) of Asheville, N.C.; also survived by six grandchildren, Theresa, Michael, Daphne, Mark, Keith and Lynn; numerous great-grandchildren. SCHUYLERVILLE [NY] -- Frances Quinn Ostrander, 89, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on Sunday, December 28, 2003 after a courageous battle with Alzheimer's Disease. Born in Albany to the late Frank J. and Helen Quinn, Frances graduated from the Academy of Holy Names and the College of St. Rose in 1935. She was a teacher at Philip Schuyler High School before moving to Schuylerville in 1946 with her husband, Hon. John L. Ostrander. In addition to serving many organizations over the years, Frances was a founding member of the Old Saratoga Historical Association, which awards a yearly scholarship in her name. She worked extensively with the National Park Service in overseeing the furnishing and operations of the General Philip Schuyler House in Schuylerville and she kept constant pressure on government officials to re-open and maintain the Saratoga Battle Monument. Frances served as vice-chairperson of the Saratoga County Bi-Centennial Commission during the 1976 national celebrations and also served as Saratoga County Historian. She was a member of the Advisory Committee in the early years of the Saratoga Performing Arts Center and she was an active member of the Saratoga County division of Cornell Cooperative Extension. She was a member of the Schuylerville Garden Club. She was a member of the Rosary Society of the Church of Visitation and a communicant of Notre Dame-Visitation Church in Schuylerville. Frances was a distinguished concert pianist, and music was a source of enjoyment for her throughout her life. She was an accomplished seamstress, designing and fashioning ensembles for those close to her. She spent many years in social and political settings, complementing the ideals and causes shared with her husband as well as advocating their strong educational standards. Frances was married to the late Assemblyman and Surrogate Judge, Hon. John L. Ostrander for 46 years, until his death in 1988. She leaves behind her daughters, Mary (Rick) Johnson of Greenwich, N.Y., Gail (Paul) Casey of Clifton Park and Lauretta Ostrander of Albany. She is survived by her brothers, Robert A. (Mickey) Quinn of Latham and Raymond J. (Anne) Quinn of Troy. She was predeceased by her son, Vibert John Ostrander and her sister, Margaret Q. (Don) Glastetter of Voorheesville, N.Y. She has five grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Notre Dame-Visitation Church, Pearl Street, Schuylerville. Spring interment will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Schuylerville. Family and friends are invited to attend the Mass and also to call from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Flynn Bros. Inc. Frank Ostrander Died Sun. A.M.
Funeral Largely Attended by Friends from Every Portion of County
Death followed a slight paralytic stroke after about a
week's illness for Frank E. Ostrander, well-known Hawkeye resident, who passed
away at his home here early Sunday morning. Friends missed his congenial visits
up town only a few weeks ago, when he was forced to remain inside because of a
cold which later developed into his last illness.
Frank Edward Ostrander was one of the twin sons born to
Leander and Mary Graves Ostrander in Jefferson Co., Wisconsin, January 9, 1856.
With his parents he came to Iowa as a small child and married Lucinda Bailey
October 24, 1876 at a double wedding at West Union in which his twin brother,
Francis Edgar, married Jane Rogers. About 26 years ago he retired from active
farming in this community and at Waucoma to move to his home in Hawkeye which
was at one time the home of his parents. One son died in infancy, and a son,
Loren, and an adopted daughter, Pearl, survive, as well as his widow and six
grandchildren.
Mr. Ostrander was an active member of the I.O.O. lF.
lodge and eager to do his share of the work. He was a devoted husband and father
and conscientiously cared for his invalid wife for many years. He was an upright
citizen, and was assessor here for years. His sunny disposition made him a host
of friends from all sections fo the county.
Final services were conducted by Rev. Cass Tuesday
afternoon and burial in Bethel cemetery. Relatives attending from a distance
were: Mrs. Pearl Hathaway and two sons of Rockford, Illinois; Mrs. R.J. Wilks,
Parsons, Kansas; Mrs. Alice Beebe, Reliance, South Dakota; Messrs and Mesdames

Fred A. Ostrander of Peekskill on September 16th at the Hudson Valley Hospital Center. He was 78. Born on March 22, 1922 to Charles and Florence Gardner Ostrander in Peekskill. He attended Uriah Hill and Drum Hill School. In July of 1941 he was inducted into the Army. He served for 37 months in the Pacific theater of operations where he acted as leader of a gun crew in Pearl Harbor. Following the war Mr. Ostrander worked for General Motors in Tarrytown (Fisher body section), the Veterans Hospital in Montrose as a cook and the City of Peekskill, Dept. of Public Works where he retired in 1983. He was a devoted family man all of his life, enjoyed gardening and entertained family and friends as an amateur magician. On April 1, 1950 he married Josephine Bruno at the Church of the Assumption Rectory. In addition to his wife he is survived by his son Fred, Jr. of Peekskill, a daughter Victoria Mihalchik of Shrub Oak, two sisters Elsie Scanlon of Palm Dale, CA and Henrietta Mitch of Croton-on-Hudson, two grandchildren Stephen, Jr. and Mary Anne Mihalchik of Shrub Oak. Frederick W. Ostrander, 80, of Best Road, Rensselaer, died Saturday at St. Clare's Hospital in Schenectady after a long illness.
Mr. Ostrander was born in North Greenbush. He was the owner of Ferry Street Welding in Albany for 50 years.
He was a deacon at the Bloomingrove Reformed Church in Defreestville and a member of the church's Sunday Night Club.
Mr. Ostrander was an Army veteran of World War II.
He was married to Jennie Harris Ostrander.
In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Dean F. Ostrander of Delanson; a daughter, Jean M. Somma of San Dimas, Calif.; a brother, Edward Ostrander of Rensselaer; a sister, Vera Gardner of Roselle Park, N.J.; and three grandchildren.

SELKIRK [NY] -- George Ostrander, 77, of River Road (Rte. 144), died suddenly Friday, October 17, 2003 at his home. A lifelong resident of the Town of Bethlehem, George was the son of the late Wesley and Lillian Ostrander. After high school he served in the United States Navy, at one time on an aircraft carrier. During his Navy service he completed training and became a licensed electrician. He was a self-employed truck driver contracting with Callanan Industries for over 50 years before retiring in 2003. George was an avid outdoorsman enjoying many activities including skeet shooting, hunting, and fishing from his beloved boat on the Hudson River. He was also a skilled bowler, appearing and winning three times on the TV Tournament Time Show. He was the beloved husband of Rosemary Keneston; devoted father of Kellie Lee Keneston; stepfather of Kathleen (Kate) Keneston-Halasz and George Halasz, Lorelei Landau and Mark Fleahman. Special Poppy to grandchildren, Chelsea and Elias, Marlaina and Austin, Natalie and Leanora. Also survived by brother-in-law, Donald C. Rubino Sr. and his wife Joan, his poker-playing buddies. Predeceased by sisters, Lillian Pritchard and Ruth VanAlstyne. Uncle to Olive McNessor, Diane Barger and Kenneth VanAlstyne Jr. Also survived by four grandnephews and two grandnieces. There will be no viewing hours or services at this time. A memorial service will be planned for a later date. Due to the wonderful care he received during his recent, successful treatment for cancer, memorial contributions, if desired, may be made to the American Cancer Society in his name.

CATO -- George E. Ostrander Sr., 89, of 11294 Pamela Terrace, Cato, NY died Sunday, December 16, 2001 in Howd Nursing Home, Moravia. Born in West Danby on August 9, 1912, he was the son of Jerry and Elva Sears Ostrander.
Mr. Ostrander lived in Cayuta, NY before moving to Cato in 1968. He was formerly employed at Cotten Hanlon Lumber Co. in Cayuta and at Bailie Lumber in Hannibal where he worked for 15 years before retiring in 1982.
Mr. Ostrander formerly served 16 years on the Cato Village Board. He was a member of St. Patrick's Church, Cato. He was a former member of Cato Senior Golf League, Cayuta Lions Club, and Cayuta Rod and Gun Club. He was a former Town of Cayuta Assessor.
Surviving are his wife of 61 years, the former Rose Lajza; a son, George E. Ostrander Jr. of Macedon; two daughters, Carolyn Baker of Ithaca and Barbara Ferguson of Locke; two brothers, Rexford Ostrander of Columbia, Pa. and Leon Ostrander of Elmira; a sister, Frances Rodabaugh of Bath; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Watkins Glen. Contributions may be made to the Howd Nursing Home Residents Care Fund, PO Box 1079, Moravia, NY 13118. B.L. Bush & Sons Funeral Home, 15 N. Main St. in Jordan has charge of arrangements.

89 of Eaton Rapids and Charlotte, died Tuesday, May 15, 2001. Mr. Ostrander was born March 16, 1912, in Hillman, Michigan, the son of Lewis W. and Julia Belle (Kirk) Ostrander.
As a young man he was deeply influenced by the life and teachings of Alfred Lawson, an engineer and humanitarian who originated the Direct Credit Society, then later the Humanity Benefactor Foundation, The University of Lawsonnomy and the Lawsonian Religion. Glenn spent his entire life living out the motto: "Serve humanity; take nothing from anybody; give everything to everybody; harm nobody." Mr. Ostrander was a building engineer for Galewood School for 10 years and a volunteer for 17 years with handicapped children and the Special Riding Program in Eaton County. Glen was also active as a volunteer in the Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Eaton County 4-H Programs, RSVP Volunteer, and Boy Scouts of America.
He is survived by grand-nephew Tony Palmer and grand-niece Allison Palmer, and special friends Melvin and Margaret Bisel. He was preceded in death by sisters Olive Ostrander and Erma K. Palmer, and brother Jay Ostrander.
Visitation will be 2:30 p.m. Saturday, May 19 at Pray Funeral Home followed by a memorial service at 4:30 p.m. with Dr. Rev. Carol Spangenberg officiating. The family has suggested memorial contributions to the Eaton Special Riding Volunteer Association. [Contributed by Clifford Lamere]

Mrs. Grace A. Halfpap, 88, of 1420 South 22nd, died at 2:45 p.m. Sunday (June 17, 2001) in Blessing Hospital.
Born December 5, 1912 in Fulton, MO., Grace was the daughter of Alvin Frank and Maggie Ripley Ostrander. She married Harry Elmer Bryant on October 1, 1935 in Quincy. He died July 20, 1980. She married Ingward Halfpap on October 27, 1984 in Beaver Creek, Ohio. He died November 30, 1984.
Grace was a member of Salem Evangelical United Church of Christ and the Afternoon Women's Guild of the church. She was also a member of Miriam White Shrine of Jerusalem, Eagles Auxiliary, and was a 25 year volunteer for R. S. V. P. and was inducted into the R.S.V.P. Hall of Fame last year.
Grace was employed at Motorola from 1948 to 1958 and then for Gates Radio from 1960 until 1970. She later worked in the Social Security Office and was a part time receptionist at John Wood Community College until her retirement in 1989.
Surviving are two daughters, June Lahrman and her husband William of Quincy and Jean Martin of Athens, IL.; one son, Harry Bryant and his wife Kathy of Park Forrest, IL. and a stepson I. R. "Butch" Halfpap and his wife Leah of Beaver Creek, Ohio; seven grandchildren, Jeffrey Sibbing and his wife Kathy of Quincy, Jonathan Sibbing and his wife Connie of Quincy, Daniel Martin and his wife Angie of West Liberty, IA, Julie Sibbing of Alexandria, VA., Debra Derry and her husband Jimmy of Summum, IL., Harry Bryant and his wife Julie of Salem, OR., and Justin Bryant and his wife Lidia of Richton Park, IL.; three step grandchildren, Mark Halfpap, Eric Halfpap, and Pam Halfpap; nine great grandchildren; several step great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Grace was preceded in death by her parents; her two husbands; three infant children, Jackie Epperson, Sandra Bryant, and Carol Bryant; four brothers, Alvin, Joseph, Ivan and Frank Ostrander; and three sisters, Lela Cook, Edna Beattie and an infant sister, Fannie Ostrander.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at 11:00 in Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home by the Rev. Stephen Schuette. Burial will be in Greenmount Cemetery.
Visitation will be Tuesday evening from 4:00 until 7:00 and Wednesday morning until the time of services in the funeral home. Eagles Auxillary #535 will conduct services at 6:00 p.m. in the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to Salem Church or the R.S.V.P. of Quincy.

Kills Self Over Health
Harold R. Ostrander, 66, of 129 Elmwood Street, died at his home early Tuesday
of carbon monoxide poisoning. Coroner Sidney D. Smith said the death was a
suicide.
Ostrander's body was discovered about 8 a.m. Tuesday by
his son Lee, 11. The boy found his father slumped over the family car in a
closed garage. The boy told investigating officers that the motor was running at
the time. Dr. Smith said the man had been dead for some time.
Ostrander, a widower, had been despondent because of
ill health, his son said. Also at the house was Ostrander's daughter, Margaret

Harris "Red" Ostrander 83, of 16 South Shore Drive, Clear Lake, died Monday, Dec. 25, 2000, at his residence. Funeral services was held Saturday, Dec. 30, 2000 at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Greg Boyle officiating. The family requests that memorials for Red Ostrander may be made to the Clear Lake Public Library.
Harris was born Feb. 21, 1917 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the son of Ora A. and Nellie (Vandoveer) Ostrander. Harris moved to Clear Lake at an early age and graduated from Clear Lake High School. He served in the U.S. Army during World Ward II and received the Purple Heart. After his discharge he returned to Clear Lake and worked as a bartender at the Ritz Club in Clear Lake for many years. ³Red² met his wife Liz Mayer, who also worked for the Ritz and they were married Feb. 18, 1946.
"Red" is survived by two sons, Jim Ostrander and his wife Kristin, Waterloo, Iowa, and Tim Ostrander and his wife Olivia, Clear Lake; three daughters, Sharon Sallee and her husband Bob, Indianola, Iowa, Mary Pals and her husband Jeff, Hawarden, Iowa, Cindy Christensen and her husband Doug, Cedar Falls, Iowa; one brother, Ora "Pinky" Ostrander, Mesa, Az.; fourteen grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
"Red" was preceded in death by his parents; his spouse Liz; one grandson, Tanner Pals; and two brothers, David and Bruce Ostrander.

Hazel R. Ostrander, 85, of Salem, died Wednesday.
She was born in Nome, Alaska, and grew up in villages and mining camps in interior Alaska. She moved to Salem in
1955. She went back to school and became a licensed practical nurse. She worked for Salem General Hospital for many
years, retiring in 1972.
She was a life member of Pioneers of Alaska and was active in many organizations including the Salem Area Seniors.
She was member of the First Presbyterian Church and enjoyed traveling and dancing.
Her husband, Stephen, died in 1971.
Survivors include her son, Stephen Jr. of Medford; daughter, Loreen Wells of Salem; sisters Mabel Holbrook of Salem,
and May Bowman of Danville, Calif.; brother, Walter Teeland of Wasilla, Alaska; two grandchildren and two
great-grandchildren.
Visiting hours will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday in Virgil T. Golden mortuary. Services will begin at 10 a.m.
Wednesday in the church. Private interment will be in Belcrest Memorial Park.

MECHANICVILLE -- Hilda C. Ostrander, 93, of Green Street, died Wednesday, November 17, 2004 at Baptist Retirement Center, Scotia, after a long illness.
Born in Rotterdam, December 14, 1910, she was the daughter of the late Edwin and Mary Thoma Booth and wife of 67 years of Senatte Ostrander, who died February 18, 1997.
Mrs. Ostrander was a homemaker who belonged to the Mechanicville Ladies Home Bureau and the Doll Ladies. A devoted and active member of the Emmanual United Church in Mechanicville, Mrs. Ostrander sang in the church choir, taught Sunday School and was a member of the women's group of the church.
Survivors include her nephew, Roland Wright of Lyme, Conn. and a number of friends and neighbors.
A graveside service will be held on Monday, November 22 at 11 a.m. at Hudson View Cemetery, Mechanicville with Rev. Jeff Wilkinson officiating. There will be no calling hours. At Seneca, Nehama County, Kansas, on Monday, Sep 12, J. Nelson Ostrander of New Hackensack, Dutchess County, NY, in the 29th year of his age.
The deceased received his death wounds on or about the 8th of August, at the hands of the Indians, while gallantly assisting in repelling an attack made by them on Comstock's Ranche, situated on the Little Blue River, 75 miles coutheast of Fort Kearney.
These brothers [referring also to Lewis F. Ostrander] leave a large circle of friends to mourn their untimely end, and in their death a void is made which on earth can never be filled. But while we mourn their absence from the circle which so heartily welcomed and loved them, we have blessed assurance that they have gained "an inheritance incorruptible, undefiled, and that fadeth not away." Mr. Ostrander, 73, of South Amboy died Jan. 17 in Raritan Bay Medical Center, Old Bridge division. Prior to his retirement in 2003, he was the owner and operator of Jim’s Diesel, South Amboy, for 30 years. His wife, Virginia Hestner Ostrander, died in 1977. Surviving are his companion, Marion Buckalew of South Amboy; two daughters, Patricia and Sharon, both of Brick; a son, Martin, also of Brick; three sisters, Frances Welsh of South Amboy, Mary Kostic of Florida and Edith Hoffarth of Union Beach; and eight grandchildren. Services were held at Carmen F. Spezzi Funeral Home, Parlin section of Sayreville. Interment was in Christ Church Cemetery, South Amboy.

He Was a Well Known Clergyman in Brooklyn
The Rev. Dr. James S. Ostrander, a well known clergyman of Brooklyn, having at one time been assistant to the Rev. Dr. Richard Salter Storrs of the Church of the Pilgrims, died at his home, 361 Macon street, this morning.
Dr. Ostrander was stricken with paralysis several years ago, and it gradually took in his whole body so that he was confined to his bed for the last two and a half years. Dr. Ostrander was born in Albany in 1832 and was educated in that city. Early in his ministerial career he was engaged in general Sunday school work, and in 1869 came to New York City, where he continued his Sunday school labors. He afterward went South to build up Sunday school work there, which had been greatly hindered by the Civil War. Dr. Ostrander was eminently successful.
In 1881 he became assistant to the late Dr. Storrs, with whom he remained for six years. Dr. Ostrander then accepted a call to become the pastor of the Stuyvesant Avenue Congregational Church, where he continued for three years. This church has for a long time been out of existence.
Dr. Ostrander is survived by his wife, who is known widely as a successful primary Snuday [sic] school worker. She has long taught the class on Saturday afternoons under the auspices of the Brooklyn Sunday School Union; two sons, Frank and L. J. Ostrander; Mrs. Hasbrouck, a daughter, and Miss Sargent, a daughter by his first wife.

John J. Ostrander who for the past thirty years has made his home in this vicinity passed away Monday from infirmities
caused by old age. He was 77 years of age.
Mr. Ostrander was born at Nowark (sic), Connecticut had traveled considerable before arriving in this county to make his
home. He followed the profession of painter and paper hanger for many years. He has made his home for some time past at
the Sheets hotel in this city up until his death.

Mrs. Ostrander is predeceased by one son Lynde E., Jr. who died October 6, 1999 and one brother Frederick Strate. Born February 5, 1921 in Syracuse, she was the daughter of Alonzo B. and Beatrice E. Brundage Strate.
After graduating from Canton High School in 1939, she graduated from Watertown School of Commerce in 1940. Mrs. Ostrander worked for the Racquette River Paper Co. as a secretary to the President for about 5 years. On May 25, 1943, she married Lynde E. Ostrander at the home of her uncle and aunt, Frank and Laura Brundage in Crary Mills with whom she lived from the age of 13. She had been raised by her grandmother, Amarette Gotham Brundage and her uncle, Frank Brundage.
Mrs. Ostrander was a former member of the Crary Mills Grange. She was active as a member of the Crary Mills Presbyterian Church and Presbyterian Women’s Organization. Mrs. Ostrander taught Sunday school and in the 1940 she served as a leader for the Crary Mills Church Youth Group. She also held the role as leader of the local 4-H Club, The Husky Workers in Pierrepont. [Contributed by Clifford Lamere]

Ostrander, 80, of River Road, Mount Upton, passed away Wednesday evening, July
14, 1999, at The Hospital, Sidney.
He was born March 31, 1919, in the town of Unadilla. Ken was the son of
the late Walter and Ruth Kreuger Ostrander. On April 14, 1940, he married Nedra
Hyatt in Unadilla.
Mr. Ostrander was a machinist for the Amphenol
Corp., Sidney, for more than 39 years. He retired in 1986. He was a member of
the Loyal Order of the Moose 277, Sidney, honorary member of the Borden Hose
Company, Mount Upton Fire Department and the I.A.M. and A.W. Local 1529 Sidney.
Mr. Ostrander is survived by his wife of 59
years, Mrs. Nedra Ostrander of Mount Upton; two sons and daughters-in-law,
Charles and Vikki Ostrander of Unadilla and Edward and Gail Ostrander of
Unadilla; daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Arnold Harris of Mount Upton;
three brothers, Howard Ostrander of Mount Upton, Donald Ostrander of Florida and
Carroll Ostrander of Mount Upton; three sisters, Pauline Partridge of Afton,
Luella Puffer of Unadilla and Linda Pope of Mount Upton; 10 grandchildren; 11
great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday,
July 18, 1999, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. Burial
will follow in the Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney.
Friends are invited to call at the funeral chapel from noon Sunday

Leader A. Ostrander was born in
Dryden, Tompkins County, New York, September 19th, 1827, and died at his home in
Hawkeye, May 4, 1898.
At the age of six his parents moved to Cook County,
Illinois, where he resided until he reached manhood. In 1852 he was united in
marriage with Mary Graves. In 1853 they moved to Jefferson County, Wisconsin,
where they lived until the fall of 1860, moving then to Fayette County, where
they have since resided. Four children were born to them, two daughters and twin
sons. Maria Rogers, who resides with her parents, Ed and Frank, of Bethel and
Eden townships, and Addie, now Mr. F.T. MeKee, of Chicago. Of a family of
thirteen, two sisters and one brother survive him.
At the age of thirty he embraced christianity and
united with the Methodist church of which he remained a member.
He was a kind, loving husbend, father and grandfather,
a kind neighbor and a true friend. His doors were always open to the homeless
and less favored than himself. A man of many virtues and few faults.

Hawkeye--Loren L. Ostrander, 82, of Fayette, and former Hawkeye resident, died
at the Fayette County Home Thursday, November 13. He had been confined five days
at Palmer Memorial hospital prior to entering the University hospital at Iowa
City where he spent 5 days and the past two weeks at the County hospital.
Funeral services were held at the Belles-Wright Funeral
home in Fayette Tuesday, November 15, with the Rev. Richard L. Jamieson, pastor
of the Wesleyan Methodist Church officiating. Burial was in the Bethel lcemetery
northwest of Hawkeye, where a short Masonic service was held.
Loren L. Ostrander, son of Frank E. and Lucinda
(Bailey) Ostrander, was born in Bethel Township, norwest of Hawkeye, December 7,
1877. He was united in marriage with Mabel Peters of Hawkeye August 13, 1936 at
Galena, Illinois. They lived in Hawkeye, Randalia, and the past three years in
Fayette.
Preceeding him in death were his parents and an infant
brother. He is survived by his wife, Mabel, a cousin Clyde Ostrander, Fayette,
and a foster sister, Pearl Hathaway, in California.
Attending the funeral from Hawkeye were Mr. and Mrs.
Art Wendland and Mrs. Nora Hecht.

CAMDEN -- Lois P. Ostrander, 85, of 51 Second St., died Thursday, Feb. 13, 1986, at her home, after a long illness.
Mrs. Ostrander was born Oct. 15, 1900, in Camden, a daughter of Rosell E. and Minnie F. Clark Pullman. She married Kenneth I. Ostrander Aug. 16, 1924. Mr. Ostrander died Aug. 22, 1961.
She was a member of the Camden United Presbyterian Church and the Camden Library Association.
Surviving are several cousins.
Graveside services will be held at Maple Hill Cemetery, Taberg, in the spring. There are no calling hours. Arrangements are by Strong and Burns Funeral Home, Rome.

Mable A. Peters, only daughter of Arthur and Addie Chapman Peters, was born
February 10, 1885, at Hawkeye, Iowa.
er early years were spent there. After graduation from
the Hawkeye public schools, she clerked in the Hawkeye post office 13 years and
was a rural school teacher for several years. A charter member of Windsor
Chaptor, O.E.S., at Hawkeye, she received her 50-year certificate in 1961.
She was married to Loren L. Ostrander Aug 13, 1936. He
passed away November 13, 1916. Her parents preceded her in death and she has no
immediate relatives.
Death came September 9, 1971, in Palmer Memorial
Hospital, West Union. Services were held at Belles Wright Funeral Home, Fayette,
on Saturday, September 11. Burial was in Bethel cemetery, Hawkeye.

SIDNEY -- Margaret L. "Peg" Ostrander, 96, a resident of the Gilmour Health Care Facility, Norwich, and formerly of 72 West Main St., Sidney, passed away peacefully Sunday evening, May 23, 1999, at her home in Norwich.
She was born June 2, 1902, in Sidney. Margaret was the daughter of the late John and Anna Jeanette Neidlinger Lawall.
On March 29, 1925, she married Milford W. Ostrander in the First Congregational Church, Sidney. He predeceased her April 25, 1944.
Mrs. Ostrander was the oldest living member of the First Congregational Church, Sidney. She was also a member of the Sidney Chapter No. 255, O.E.S. and the American Red Cross of Sidney. She was a former member of the Sidney Fire Department Auxiliary.
Peg was an avid bridge player in the Tri-Town Area.
Peg is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Milford L. and Kathryn Ostrander of Sidney; three grandchildren, George Ostrander of West Edmeston, Margaret DeCocker of Oneonta and John Ostrander of Sidney; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 26, 1999, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with the Rev. Roanne MacEwan, pastor of the Sidney First Congregational Church, officiating. Burial will follow in the Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney.
Friends are invited to call from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday evening at the funeral chapel with the family in attendance. The Sidney Chapter of Eastern Star will conduct memorial services 8 p.m. Tuesday evening at the funeral chapel.

FOSTORIA -- Funeral services for Margaret Marie Swartz, 77, of Courtly Drive, Fostoria, and of North Fort Myers, Fla., will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Mann-Hare Funeral Home, Fostoria, the Rev. Dr. Larry W. Knigga officiating. Burial will be in Knollcrest Gardens, east of Findlay.

Mrs. Swartz died at 2 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2002, at her residence in North Fort Myers, Fla.
She was born Feb. 4, 1925, in Prairie Depot (now Wayne) to Walter Ray and Ina Gladys (Bressler) Ostrander. She married Harry Frank Swartz on Feb. 8, 1947, and he survives.
Also surviving are a son, Bill of Fostoria; six daughters, Mrs. Mike (Diana) Mock and Mrs. William (Jacquie) Newman, both of Findlay; Mrs. Larry (Luci) Runion, Fostoria; Laura Smith, Lake Station, Ind.; Mrs. Gary (Ginny) Shinew, Cygnet; and Mrs. Scott (Jane) Benroth, Bluffton; 23 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; a brother, Ron Ostrander, Old Town, Fla.; and two sisters, Alta Sexton, Wayne; and LouEllen Duty, Bowling Green.
She was preceded in death by a son, Harry "Sonny" Jr.; and three sisters, Orvetta Smith, Lois Risenburg and Pat Dispennett.
Mrs. Swartz was a homemaker and had worked at RCA, Findlay, for eight years.
She was a member of Hope Lutheran Church, Fostoria, and a former member of its Rehoboth Circle. She was a member of Elks Lodge 935, Fostoria, and Coachman Club. She was a former member of Lakeland Golf Club, Fostoria; Swinging Satellites Square Dancing Club; and Vagabonds Camping Club.

Margaret Jennie Ostrander

Mrs. Jennie Ostrander, longtime
resident of this community, died early Tuesday morning at the Mayo hospital in
Rochester following a brief illness.
Mrs Ostrander had not been especially well for some
time but the seriousness of her trouble was not learned until the latter part of
the week. She was taken to Rochester Saturday by two of her sons, Clyde of
Fayette, and Harold of Alpha, where she submitted to an operation. She rallied
and was apparently doing very well, so much so that Harold returned home
Saturday night but was called Monday night and asked to return immediately.
The body was brought to West Union Tuesday, and taken
to the Methodist parsonage. Fuderal services were conducted Thursday by the Rev.
E.I. Selden at the Methodist Church, and burial was made in the West Union
Cemetery. Acting pall bearers were her five nephews and one grandson, Rolly
Rogers, Dr. Ray Rogers, Robert Rogers, Gordon Luce, Loren Ostrander, and Scott
Ostrander. Mrs Mae Thompson sang "Rock of Ages" and "Jesus, I My
Cross Have Taken."
Margaret Jennie Rogers was born at Albany, Vermont,
March 29, 1856, and passed away at the hospital at Rochester, Minnesota,
November 7, 1932. She was the youngest daughter of James and Nancy Chamberlain
Rogers and came to Iowa with her parents in 1858 in a covered wagon, the family
settling near Fort Atkinson. She knew all the hardships of a pioneer family,
being the youngest of fifteen children.
She was married to Edgar Ostrander at Fort Atkinson,
October 23, 1876. They made their home on a farm in Bethel township for many
years, moving to West Union in November 1906. To this union four sons were born,
three of whom survive: Clyde Everton of Fayette; Clinton Reuben, of Tyndall,
South Dakota; Glen Elton, who died in infancy; and Harold Ray of Alpha. She is
also survived by six grandchildren and four great grandchildren and many other
relatives.
Mrs. Ostrander joined the Methodist church early in
life and was a faithful member to the last. She loved her Bible and knew the
comfort that comes from faith in God. During the last years of her life she
depended much upon her Heavenly Father's goodness and care.

MANSFIELD: Marjorie Muse Ostrander, 78, of Rocky Rill Court, Mansfield, died Saturday morning August 28, 2004 in her home, following a struggle with pulmonary fibrosis illness.
She was born August 11, 1926 in New Brighton, Pennsylvania, to Roy M. and Mildred (Mansfield) Muse, and two years later, her father moved the family to Loudonville, where he had been appointed station manager of the Pennsylvania Railroad. At the outbreak of WWII, they returned to New Brighton.
Some of her most cherished memories were associated with growing up in Loudonville, and the friends she made there.
Mrs. Ostrander was graduated from New Brighton High School in 1945. She then enrolled in the College of Wooster, graduating with the class of 1949.
She began her teaching career at Bucyrus High School, and also taught at Hayesville High School, Appleseed Jr. High and Union School. She was teaching at Bellville High School during the time it merged with Butler to become Clear Fork.
On August 1, 1953, she was married to Owen Ostrander, by the Rev. Clifford J. Leach in the Loudonville First Presbyterian Church.
They began their married life in Mansfield and lived there for about ten years. After moving to Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, she enrolled at Wayne State University in Detroit, in the Library Science Graduate Department, to become a certified School Librarian. In 1997 she retired from t he Academy of the Sacred Heart as head media specialist. Later that year she and her husband returned to Mansfield.
Mrs. Ostrander was an active member of The First Presbyterian Church in Mansfield, where she was involved with Prime Time and the Nurture Committee.
She is survived by her devoted husband Owen “Rocky” Ostrander, to whom she was married 51 years; their daughter and son-in-law Jaimie and William Kunecke of Mansfield; two beloved grandsons William Kunecke and Forest Kunecke; her sister and brother-in-law Suzanne and Fred Bauer of Shiloh; a brother and sister-in-law Frank and Norma Muse of Pataskala; cherished nieces and nephews Melanie Shoup, George Shipley, Cindy Muse, as well as many other extended family members; and a host of friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother Keith J. Muse on November 19, 2000.
The family will receive friends Monday, August 30, 2004 from 6-8 pm in the parlor of First Presbyterian Church, 399 South Trimble Road, Mansfield. The funeral service will be held Tuesday at 10 am in the Chapel of the church. The Rev. Dennis R. Allison will officiate. Friends may also call the hour prior to the funeral service. Burial will follow in Loudonville Cemetery. The Lexington Avenue Snyder Funeral Home is in charge of funeral arrangements.
Memorial contributions to MedCentral Hospice may be made at the visitation, or through the funeral.

DEADWOOD - Marjorie A. Pontius, 92, of Deadwood died Tuesday, July 29, 2003, at Kirkwood Manor in Pluma, SD. Marjorie died of melanoma (skin cancer) after a lengthy illness.
Marjorie was born September 28, 1909, in Harding, SD, to Roy and Pearle Ostrander. In 1923 she moved with her family to Deadwood, where she attended school, graduating from Deadwood High School in 1927. She then attended Dakota Wesleyan at Mitchell, the University of Wisconsin and the University of Washington in Seattle, WA, where she graduated in 1934 with a degree in Comparative Literature and Library Science. She returned to South Dakota, where she taught in Oelrichs. On July 3, 1938, Marjorie married Elmer Pontius in Deadwood, SD. Following their marriage they lived in Deadwood, where she has lived since. In 1956 she taught school in Englewood for a short time, and in 1959 went to work as a Librarian for the Deadwood Public Library, where she worked for many years before retiring in 1991.
Marjorie was selected as the 1986 S.D. Librarian of the year. She was active in the local Cancer Society, being selected Volunteer of the Year, and served on the executive board of the South Dakota Cancer Society. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Deadwood, member of Chapter Y-PEO sisterhood, active in the PTA association for many years. She was active in the Lawrence County Historical Society and Black Hills Regional United Methodist Historical Society. In 1953 Marjorie was selected as the South Dakota Mother of the year.
A memorial has been established to the American Cancer Society.
Marjorie is survived by her son, Jerry (Jill) Pontius of Deadwood; three daughters, Helen (George) Auer of Spearfish, Louise (Paul) Dauphinais, Bottineau, ND, and Linda (Roger) Svec, Estelline, SD; her sister, Esther Chastain, Portland, OR; thirteen grandchildren; twenty four great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1969, her parents, a sister and two brothers.
Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Spearfish on Thursday. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, August 4, 2003, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Lead, with Rev. Steve Foss officiating. The Lead-Deadwood Funeral Chapel has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Marvin Ostrander, 57, Almond, died Wednesday, July 5, 2000, at the home of his brother in Almond after a battle with cancer.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Hardell-Holly Funeral Home in Almond with Pastor Richard Fite officiating. Burial will be in the North Almond Cemetery in the town of Almond.
Visitation will be at the funeral home from 10 a.m. Monday until the services. A memorial has been established in his name.
Mr. Ostrander was born Feb. 3, 1943, in the town of Belmont, a son of the late Fred and Edna (Duerst) Ostrander.
He worked at the Almond Creamery, Turzinski Poultry and for the village and town of Almond.
Survivors include one brother, Howard (Beatrice), Almond; three sisters, Belva (Norman) Stevens, Iola, Edith Schultz, Sugarbush, and Arlene Watt, Manhattan, Kansas; nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by one sister, Dolly Jenner Huven; and an infant brother and sister.

PORT HURON -- Mary Ann Palmer, 60, of Port Huron, died Wednesday, August 18, 2004 in her home surrounded by family after a courageous 18 month battle with cancer.
She was born June 16, 1944 in Port Huron to the late George and Anna Ostrander.
She married Grant W. Palmer on March 17, 1961 in Port Huron.
Mrs. Palmer was a member of First Presbyterian Church. She was a devoted wife and mother who adored her children.
She is survived by her husband Grant; two sons, Mr. and Mrs. Mark (Kim) Palmer of Fishers, Indiana and Mr. and Mrs. Michael (Rayna) Palmer of Port Huron; three brothers, Mr. and Mrs. Arnold (Wanda) Ostrander of Kimball Township, Mr. and Mrs. George (Eileen) Ostrander of Marysville, and Raymond Ostrander and Patti Dupree of Port Huron; three sisters, Mr. and Mrs. Robert (Nancy) Collinge, Mr. and Mrs. Donald (Sandy) Collinge and Mr. and Mrs. John (Linda) Dennis all of Port Huron; three brothers-in-law, Gary Hock, Mr. and Mrs. Gary (Janie) Palmer and Mr. and Mrs. Larry (Eleanor) Palmer; many nieces and nephews; and special friends, Mr. and Mrs. Ron (Jane) Dombrowski.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert and Edward Ostrander and two sisters, Betty Ann Shovan and Diana Sue Hock.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, August 23, 2004 in First United Presbyterian Church. Dr. Mark P. Thomas will officiate.
Visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery, Port Huron Township.

MEMORIALS
Mary C. Hull was born in the State of Illinois, January 1, 1831, and died in her home in Goldendale, Wash., July
5, 1912, at the advanced age of 81 years, 6 months and 4 days. At the tender age of 5 years she was left an orphan - a
fact which may in part account for her unusual interest in orphan children in later years. For she cared for no less than
fifteen orphan children at different times in her own home. Just before reaching her fifteenth year, in the State of
Illinois, she was converted to God under the labors of the famous Peter Cartwright, and joined the Methodist
Episcopal Church. She at once became active in the work of the Lord, and soon succeeded in leading some of her
friends and relatives to the Savior. Among them was one of her aunts, whose criticisms she had especially dreaded.
Thus she grew in confidence and in usefulness. It hardly need to be added that the church relationship thus began was
never severed until she was finally called to the fellowship of the church triumphant - a period of almost 67 years. Miss Hull rapidly developed into an unusually strong, aggressive,
effective Christian character, who was instrumental to the salvation of many people, who will "rise up and call her blessed."
One of the very marked characteristics of this woman of God was her intense and unwavering loyalty to her church and her
pastor. No one could attack either in her presence without call out from her an earnest protest. This trait asserted itself in her
recent sickness when she and all others thought that she was at the end of her career. With her characteristic solicitude she
sought to know whether her portion toward the support of the church was paid up, saying that she did not wish to die in debt
to the church. The subject of our sketch crossed the plains to Oregon in the year 1853, arriving at Portland in the month of
October. Following her coming to the west she engaged in the work of education. She taught for three years in the
Portland Academy and Female Seminary, under the principalship of the Rev. C.S. Kingsley. A little later she taught among
the Umpqua and Willamette tribes of Indians. During the year 1857 she was united in marriage to the Rev. John Ostrander,
who had been licensed to preach in the previous year, in the Oregon Annual Conference, and ordained by Bishop Ames. For
some years they labored in the bounds of the Oregon Conference. But Brother Ostrander's health failing, he quit the active
ministry and they came in the year 1878 to Klickitat County, settling in the Rock Creek country. There they lived until the fall
of 1890. At this time, she made a visit to the Middle West, and during her absence, Mr. Ostrander died. On her return she
moved to Goldendale, where she has since resided. She and Mr. Ostrander were the parents of five children: John W.
Ostrander, of Gold Beach, Oregon; Mrs. Simeon Bolton, of The Dalles, Oregon; Mrs. C.F. Fulton, of Portland, Oregon; Miss
Anna R. Ostrander, of Goldendale, Wash.; and the late Wilber Ostrander of The Dalles, Oregon. A few weeks ago Mrs. Ostrander was taken
seriously sick, suffering among other things a slight stroke of paralysis. Neither she, her physician nor her friends supposed
that she would ever recover from it. But to the surprise of all she rallied from it sufficiently to become able to sit up not a
little for some weeks. And strange to say, her son Wilbur, who was well and hearty when she was taken sick, took sick and
died before her partial recovery. Mrs. Ostrander not only did not fear, but even anxiously desired the end, praying earnestly
again and again that her Savior would hasten his coming for her. Indeed, her last night on earth, the night of July 4, was spent
not only amid much suffering, but also in almost constant prayer. She entreated the Lord to "come quickly" and take her home.
Accordingly, on the morning of July 5th between five and six o'clock, just after she had been permitted to see
another return of her country's birthday, she was permitted to celebrate her entrance into the heavenly home. The angel of death
tole into her room unobserved, and 'ere any one was aware stole her away, and wafted her to her heavenly home. This was
as she wished. She had desired and no doubt prayed that thus it would be. And her Savior granted her request. She will be
missed. Though she has not been permitted to attend the public service for several months. Yet we shall miss her. She will
be missed from the preaching service and the class meeting, from which she was never absent except when she was for some
good reason unable to be present; from the Woman's Foreign Missionary Society of this local church, of which she was a
charter member; from the Aid Society, for whose prosperity her hands have been employed with her needle, even within the
last two weeks of her life; and by all the other agencies of the local church. But though she is personally absent, her influence
will abide - for like Abel, "She being dead yet speaketh." A good and useful woman has gone from us. May both her life and her
departure be sanctified of God to the building up of his kingdom. And may the good influence of her life fall like a mantle
upon her descendants for the days to come, as well as prove a solace to their grief at the hour of separation. Her funeral was
conducted in the Goldendale church by her pastor, July 7th, and she was laid beside her husband in the Goldendale cemetery.

Mary Elizabeth Ostrander of Newburgh, a homemaker, died Tuesday, Feb. 2, 1999, in St. Luke's Hospital, Newburgh. She was 86. The daughter of Joseph and Mary Karman Gomboy, she was born March, 4, 1912, in Roseton.
Survivors include two sons, John Ostrander of Newburgh and Henry J. Ostrander Jr. of New Windsor; 13 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by one son, Joseph Ostrander.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 5, at DiDonato Funeral Home, Rt. 9W, Marlboro. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 6, in Our Lady of Mercy, Roseton. Father Alfred R. Pizzuto will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Middlehope. Mary Jane Wilhelmi Kates (nee Ostrander) of Mount Vernon, NY died on July 6, 2003 at the age of 90 in her "home" at the Wartburg. Mary was born in Whitestore, Queens, May 18, 1913. She was married in 1929 to George Wilhelmi who predeceased her. She later married her 2nd husband, Martin Kates and resided in Flushing, Queens for most of the 41-year marriage. She is survived by two daughters, Joy DeBellis and husband, Anthony of Mt. Vernon, NY and Mildred Pisano and husband, Robert of Powhatan, Virginia. Also, seven surviving grandchildren, (grandson, Ronald G. Pisano predeceased her), eight great-grandchildren (9th due soon), and seven great-great grandchildren. Predeceased by her husband, Martin Kates and her siblings, Walter Ostrander, George Ostrander and Susan Ann Ruelke. Mary will be remembered for her courage, strength of character, love of family and sense of humor. Reposing at the Funeral Home on Wednesday, July 9, 2-4 and 7-9 pm. Mary M. Graves was born in Erie
County, New York, January 14, 1834, and died at the home of her granddaughter,
Gertrude Hull, June 24, 1912.
She was, in Chicago, Illinois, August 24, 1852, united
in marriage to Leander Ostrander, who 14 years ago last month preceded her to
the better world. To this union were born four children: Mrs. Maria Rogers, a
lifelong invalid who with her daughter Gertrude made their home with the mother
and grandmother of their early years; Frank and Ed, twin brothers; and Mrs.
Adelaide McKee; four grandsons, Loren, Clyde, Clint, and Harold, one
grandaughter (before mentioned) and one step grend-daughter, Mrs. Henry Parker;
nine great grand children; one sister, Mrs. Diana Persons of Oak Park, Illinois,
Mr. Lester Graves, For Atkinson, Wisconsin, Mr. S.V.R. Graves, Oelwein, Iowa. Of
the latter three only S.V.R. Graves was able to attend the funeral. Besides
these she leaves many friends--for to know her was to be her friend--to mourn
the loss of a kind and loving mother, sister and neighbor.

Thus in the passing of Grandma Ostrander, as she was affectionately called by us
who loved her, a noble Christian woman has gone to her reward and God grant that
of each of us it may be as truly said as of her, "She hath done what she
could."
The funeral services were held from the Methodist
church Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by her pastor, Rev. E.R.
Leach, assisted by Rev. William Galbreth, of Randalia. The bearers were C.I.
Pitts, G.H. Austin, H.C. Hose, J. H. Sorg, H.R. Palmer, J.A. Shales. At the
conclusion of the services, the procession wended its way to the Bethel
Cemetery, where her earthly ashes were laid beside those of her husband. Thus
another pioneer has passed to her reward, leaving behind the memory of a life
well spent in an untiring devotion to her home, kindred and friends.

Maureen was a homemaker and a member of Lula United Methodist Church.

A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 27, 1999, in Willamette National Cemetery for Melvin Luther Ostrander, who died May 24 at age 64. Mr. Ostrander was born July 25, 1934, in Jeffers, Minn., and moved to Oregon City as an infant. From 1952 to 1960, he served in the U.S. Air Force. He was an auto-body repairman and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Beaverton First Ward. In 1964, he married Anna Phelps. Milford "Mitt" L. Ostrander, 76, of Sidney passed away Friday, February 8, 2002, at the Skilled Nursing Facility in Sidney. He was born November 6, 1925, son of the late Milford W. and Margaret Lawall Ostrander in Oneonta, N.Y. Mitt served his country in the United States Air Force during WWII. He married Kathryn Curtis on November 27, 1949 in Unadilla. Mr. Ostrander was employed as a supervisor for Amphenol Corp. when he retired in 1987. He was also the sexton for Prospect Hill Cemetery for many years. Mitt was a member of the Sidney Golf and Country Club and the Sidney Fire Department. He was a past member of the American Legion Post #183 in Sidney. Mitt loved golf and bowling, as well as boating and camping. He is survived by wife, Kathryn Ostrander, Sidney; two sons and daughter-in-law, George Ostrander, West Edmeston, John and Debbie Ostrander, Unadilla; daughter, Margaret Ostrander, Oneonta; four grandchildren, Mackenzie and Todd Paternoster, Mt. Upton, Todd DeCocker, Roy, Utah, Abigail and Amanda Ostrander, Unadilla; one great grandson, Nicholas Paternoster; and several cousins. Funeral services are private and at the convenience of the family. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday, February 11, 2002, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. Minnie was the youngest and darling of the family. She occupied a place in the hearts of many friends who now
mourn their loss. But Jesus loved her, and would have her dwell with him, and in obedience to the summons her

DARTMOUTH -- Myrtle F. (Card) Ostrander, 85, of Dartmouth died at home Sunday, April 4, 1999, after a brief illness.
She was the widow of Floyd L. Ostrander and the daughter of the late Herbert and Bertha (Sawyer) Card.
Born in New Bedford, she lived in Dartmouth for 40 years and was a member of St. Paul's Methodist Church.
Mrs. Ostrander was a sponsor of the ministries of the Crystal Cathedral in California. She was an avid reader and enjoyed crafts, crocheting and flowers.
She was a devoted mother and grandmother who loved her family dearly. Survivors include three sons, Donald L. Ostrander of Middleboro, Arthur F. Ostrander of Lakeside, Calif., and Robert E. Ostrander of Dartmouth; two daughters, June A. Crowley of Dartmouth and Beverly J. Souza of Lakeville; a brother, Raymond Card of New Bedford; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was the sister of the late Doris Dauplaise.

Ann Arbor, MI -- known to her friends and family as Louise or Lou, was born February 3, 1921 to Joe and Minewell Rozeboom, near Dorr, Michigan. She died on Sunday, April 18, 2004. Louise spent her youth on the family farm near Allegan, MI with her parents and younger siblings, Joe Jr., James, Kathryn, Margaret and Marie. She had many happy memories of those years among a loving family, where she acquired her characteristics of love, kindness, hard work and quiet piety, which marked the remainder of her life. Louise graduated from the University of Michigan nursing School in 1946 after overcoming pulmonary tuberculosis incurred from a patient. She then practiced her profession while she pursued further academic studies in order to receive a Bachelor of Science Degree from Western Michigan University. In 1950, she married Leon D. Ostrander Jr., and settled in Ann Arbor, where she spent almost all the rest of her life. Louise and Leon have three children, Leon D. III, (Simone), Jane Louise, and John D. (Shannon); and three grandchildren. The children and grandchildren were the joy of Louise's life. Outside her home she was very active in the First Presbyterian Church of Ann Arbor, where she was an Elder and had held important positions in women's groups. She also served as a volunteer in the University of Michigan Child Health Clinic for many years, and was a long time member of the University of Michigan Faculty Women's Club. Louise loved her family, her neighbors, her church and her many friends, and in turn was a very special person to all who knew her. Her wonderful traits of love, service to others, piety and virtue were leavened by a keen sense of humor and a buoyantly optimistic outlook on life. She could lift and inspire all of her family and friends. In spite of many health problems in recent years she remained optimistic and forward looking. She will be sorely missed by her family and friends. Louise was preceded in death by her parents; brother Joe; and sister Kathryn. BINGHAMTON -- Robert Ostrander of Binghamton, died Thursday, July 23, at home. He was 64.
Son of Charlotte Ostrander of Lookout and the late Francis Ostrander, he was born November 16, 1935.
He was a veteran of the U.S. army and the U.S. air force and was a member of the United Methodist Church in Binghamton.
Survivors include his wife, Cynthia L. Hubbard Ostrander; three sons, Darryl and Daniel, both of Honesdale, and David of Candia, NH; a daughter, Patricia Bibalo; two step-daughters, Julia Dishavoon of Waycross, GA, and Susan McCoy of Martinez, GA; a brother, Jon of Matthews, NC; three sisters, Shirley Weiss and Charlotte Schellberg, both of Lookout, and Kathryn Ostrander of Columbia, MD; two grandchildren; an aunt; cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Donald.

Robert 'Bob' Ostrander

TRAVERSE CITY -- Robert "Bob" Ostrander, 78, of Traverse City, died Saturday, Oct. 26, 2002, at Munson Medical Center, where he received good care.
Born Feb. 15, 1924 in Cadillac, he was the son of Carl Jackson and Ila (Belle) Ostrander. In 1967, he married Nan Ostrander and they married again in 1992.
Bob served his country honorably with the U.S. Army for over 13 years as a medic. He was a member of Alcoholics Anonymous for over 35 years and maintained his sobriety despite personal health problems. He was dedicated to the AA program and was always grateful for the good life that sobriety provided.
Bob was a substance abuse counselor for the Washtenaw Council on Alcoholism in Ann Arbor. In 1979, he worked for Community Family and Children Services as a substance abuse counselor. In 1982, he and his wife moved to Traverse City, where he was the director of the Good Samaritan Lodge, retiring in 1983. After retirement, Bob became the greeter at Meijer and enjoyed the work and his co-workers. He was loved and respected by so many people.
Over the 20 years living in Traverse City, Bob and his wife became dedicated customers of the Traverse City Big Boy, where they both received much friendship, care, and concern from Mark and his employees. His sense of humor will be missed there.
Survivors include his devoted wife, Nan; beloved son, Bob (Rhonda) Ostrander and their children, Adam, Rachel and Aaron; stepson, Michael (Paula) Geoghegan, whom he loved; daughter-in-law, Laura Ostrander and her children, Michael and Jeff; daughter-in-law, Paula Kinyon and her daughter, Saroya; three great-grandchildren, Mikenzie, Zachary, and Justin; and dear friend, Emma, who will miss his beautiful voice and his hand on her shoulder.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents; son, Carl Jackson II; and sister, Velma Oboler.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 9, at 11 a.m. at the Unity Church of Traverse City, 3600 5 Mile Road. The Rev. Judy Grimes will be officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Father Fred Foundation. The family is being served by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
The family is grateful for the care Bob received from Dr. Richard Entz over a long period of illness.

Ronald Lane Ostrander, 51, of Princeton, died on Monday, Sept. 29, 2003, in Fairview Northland Hospital in Princeton.
He was born Nov. 29,1951, in St. Cloud, to Harold and Eleen (Sendek) Ostrander. The family moved to Princeton when he was 5. He graduated from the Princeton High School in 1970.
After graduation, Mr. Ostrander worked for Smith Systems and the Union Eagle. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and also a member of the National Guard.
Mr. Ostrander was a police officer from 1976, retiring in August of 1995. The past several years he was an employee at Cambridge Metal and Plastics. He was a member of the American Legion, Ducks Unlimited, Minnesota Deer Hunters Association and Minnesota Police Officers Association.
Mr. Ostrander loved the outdoors. He was an avid motorcyclist, a bow hunter, duck hunter and a fisherman. He had a passion for horseshoes, music and performing for others. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
According to his family, “Ron had an infectious sense of humor and love of life. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.”
The funeral service was held Oct. 3 at the First Congregational Church, Princeton. The Rev. Don Britt officiated. Burial was in Oak Knoll Cemetery, Princeton. Casket bearers were Brandon Stottler, Earl Keller, Gary Stottler, Tom Lundeen, Rick Trigg and Jon George.
He is survived by best friend and long-time companion, Dawn Osvold of Princeton; sons, Dano of Elk River, Jeremy of Zimmerman and Justin of Princeton; three grandsons; mother, Eleen of Princeton; brothers and sisters, Sue (Al) Neuman of Delano, Barb (Bruce) Atkins of East Bethel, Sally (Buzz) Jaster of Cosmos, Mary Ann (Jake) Jacobson of Princeton, Barry (Kathy) of Braham and Kim (Kevin) Lovstuen of Richfield; many nieces, and nephews; and his former wife, Mary Ostrander of Princeton.

ROTTERDAM -- Ruth H. Ostrander, of Hamburg Street, Rotterdam, died Tuesday, December 14, 2004 at her daughter's home.
Ruth was born in Schenectady and is the daughter of the late John H. Woodruff and Mabel (Primmer) Woodruff.
She was a graduate of Nott Terrace High School in Schenectady. Ruth was employed as a teller for the former Foundry and Pattern Makers Credit Union in Schenectady. She was a member of the Lynwood Reformed Church in Guilderland. Ruth volunteered as a ceramics teacher at the Schenectady Girls Club. She was also a member of the Eastern Star, Rotterdam Senior Citizens and St. Gabriel's Women's Group.
Ruth was predeceased by her husband Byron W. Ostrander whom she married June 27, 1941 and her brother, Charles Woodruff. Survivors include two sons, Russell J. Ostrander of Seaside Heights, N.J. and Darryl L. Ostrander (Nancy) of Niskayuna, N.Y.; two daughters, Laurel E. Straight (Richard) of Rotterdam, N.Y. and Marilyn R. Dillion (Roger) of Gansevoort, N.Y.; three sisters-in-law, Beverly Woodruff of Rotterdam, N.Y., A.E. Loomen of Princetown, N.Y. and Marjorie Talbot (Ronald) of Schenectady; also survived by 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Thursday 1 p.m. at the Bond Funeral Home, Broadway and Guilderland Avenue, Schenectady. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. There are but few men in Brooklyn who will leave behind them so many sincere and sympathizing friends as Mr. Stephen M. Ostrander, who died last night. For almost a quarter of a century he was identified with the affairs of the municipality as a lawyer, a political orator and local historian. He had been a sufferer from rheumatism for a number of years past. He continue at work in his office, however, until Saturday last, when he complained of severe pains in the region of his heart and kidneys. On Sunday he grew much worse, and Dr. Hoyt, a neighbor, was called in. He sank steadily, however, and died last evening from ura.mic [sic] poisoning, caused by the failure of his kidneys to act. Mr. Ostrander was born in this city fifty-four years ago, and received his early education in the public schools. Admitted to the bar shortly after attaining his majority he soon gained a reputation as an eloquent and painstaking practitioner. Being a man of some ambition he early identified himself with the politics of the city, and for more than twenty years his voice has been hear in every campaign, and always in the interests of the Democratic party. During the exciting days of the last campaign he actively engaged in the support of Hill and Whitney. Three years ago he was a candidate for Surrogate when the late Jacob I. Bergen obtained the nomination. He was married in August, 1866, and his widow survives him. They had no children. Two brothers survive him -- one Dr. George O. Ostrander and the other Peter W. Ostrander, a lawyer. Mr. Ostrander was a leading member of the Second Presbyterian Church, of which Rev. Dr. Van Dyke is pastor. The funeral of the late Stephen M. Ostrander took place this morning at ten o'clock from his late residence, 230 Carlton avenue. The interment was in Cypress Hills Cemetery. Old Brooklynites Paying a Tribute to His Memory

The Surrogate's court room was filled last evening with the members of the Old Brooklynites Association, the occasion being the regular monthly meeting...
Mr. Judah B. Voorhees said: Again we are called upon to mourn the loss of one of our associates who has taken a great interest in the affairs of the society from its organization, although he did not become a member until he was fifty years of age, and who has by his untiring industry, ready pen and historical research contributed to enrich its archives by many gems of historical and literary merit. Stephen Melanethon Ostrander, the kind friend, genial companion, wise counselor and worthy associate, who was with us at our last meeting, is no more. He departed this life at his residence in this city on the 19th day of November, 1885, in the 54th year of his age, at 230 Carlton avenue, after a short illness of five days. He was conscious to the night before his death. By the death of Mr. Ostrander the society has met with a loss which is almost irreparable... I have prepared this brief history of his career: Stephen M. Ostrander was born in York street, in this city, February 3, in the year 1832. Shortly after his birth his parents moved into that portion of the city then known as the Wallabout. The Ostrander family, from which he sprang, are descended from the earliest settlers of Long Island. He graduated at the head of his class in the public school which he attended, and shortly after leaving school entered law office, where he pursued his studies with untiring zeal and industry, and in due course of time was admitted to the bar as an attroney and counselor of the Supreme Court of the State of New York. He built up a fine and lucrative practice in this city and New York, where he kept his law office, and was well known in all the courts of both cities... acquired a reputation as a public speaker... Democrat... Mr. Ostrander was married in August, 1866, and his wife survives him. He had no children. He was a man of generous impulses, often prosecuting law suits for poor people and declining compensation... resident of Brooklyn... His brother, Peter W. Ostrander, survives him, is a Republican in politics and holds as prominent a place in the ranks of that party as did his late brother in the councils of the Democrats. He leaves behind him a manuscript copy of the History of Kings County, and he also published sketches of portions of Long Island... He was a good husband, a close student and devoted to his books... He was a member of the Second Presbyterian church, a trustee of Rutgers Female College, and also a member of the Holland Society of the City of New York, and also of Lexington Lodge, Free and Accepted Masons, and also of the South Brooklyn Masonic Association and Provident Mutual Association. The loss our society has sustained by the death of Mr. Ostrander and other valued and esteemed members during the past year muss cause a pang of sadness and regret among all our members and tend to bind tus more closely in the bonds of friendship and brotherhood.

STEVE W. OSTRANDER, 75, former long-time Alaskan, died in Oregon April 2. He came to Anchorage in 1919 during the construction of the Alaska Railroad and retired to Oregon in 1955. Mrs. Lashley, 80, of Howell died Oct. 15 at home.
Born in Howell, she was a lifelong resident of the Maxim section and a lifetime member of the Pierce Memorial Presbyterian Church in Farmingdale. For more than 30 years, she worked at the original Connie’s, a restaurant in Farmingdale. She then worked in Farmingdale as a dental assistant for her son-in-law, Dr. Byron Marriner.
She was predeceased by her husband, William H. Lashley, in 2001, her parents, Ella Clayton and Walter Ostrander, and a brother, Warren Ostrander, in 1926. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, William H. (Jr.) and Barbara Lashley of Jackson; a daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Dr. Byron Marriner of Manasquan; two brothers, Charles Ostrander of Jupiter, Fla., and George Ostrander of Howell; a sister and brother-in-law, Lavina and Franklin Ellis of Farmingdale; a grandson; and a great-grandson.

FULLERTON [NE] -- Velma P. Ostrander, 89, of Fullerton died Sunday, July 29, 2001, at her home.

Mrs. Ostrander was born Aug. 13, 1911, in the Timber Creek area near Belgrade to Ted and Pearl (Bigley) Foland. She grew up in Belgrade and graduated from Belgrade High School in 1930.
She married Claire Ostrander on Dec. 9, 1931, in Fullerton. They farmed in the Belgrade area for 10 years and then moved to Oregon, Washington and Florida. They returned to Fullerton in 1978 and remained there until her death.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church. She enjoyed going to church, knitting, crocheting and playing the organ.
Survivors include her husband; a son, Claire Ostrander Jr. of Houston; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; three brothers, Jack Foland of Kansas City, Kan., Gene Foland of Fullerton and Russell Foland of Belgrade; and three sisters, Inez Bourn, Lois Owens and June Underwood, all of Fullerton.
She was preceded in death by three sisters, Rachel Ostrander, Ida Ostrander and Edna Bourn.

OSTRANDER, Vinton L. -- Passed away at his home in Dunelin, FL, on July 20, 2004 at the age of 89. America lost another of her World War II Heroes and a family lost a loving father. Vinton was born in Brown City, MI on April 27, 1915. He married Georgena J. Edgett in 1935 on Christmas Eve and stayed by her side until she passed away 57 years later. Vinton had three sons, James H. and wife Peggy of Ada, MI, Larry E. and wife Cheryl of Clearwater, FL and his first son, Gerald L., who preceded him in death. Vinton was also the proud grandfather of six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Vinton was a Corporal in the United States Army during WWII. He served as an engineer in Patton's 7th Army and received the Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, European and Eastern European Theater Medals, along with five Bronze Battle Stars. Vinton shared his stories and adventures with members of the VFW Post. After his service in the military, Vinton raised his family in Almont, MI. He was a mechanic for the Stroh's Brewing Company until he retired. Visitation will be held Friday, July 23, 2004 from 12-3PM and graveside service at Almont Hough Cemetery at 4PM. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society in the names of Vinton and Georgena Ostrander. Arrangements were made by Muir Brothers Funeral Home in Almont.

The Work of an Instant. Another fatal example has been added to the long list of casualties resulting from careless handling of fire arms. Walter H. Ostrander who has been traveling in various businesses in past years, but who has been occupied on the farm of his father David Ostrander for some time, was out in the sugar bush about half a mile in the rear of the homestead and east of the road, yesterday a.m. He was accompanied by a boy named Fred Devenger and carried a double barreled shot gun. He placed the gun against a pile of bolts. The boy asked him whether they should get some sap. Walter replied that they would cut some wood first. The boy turned away but in a few moments he heard the report of fire arms and seeing Walter lying extended on the ground with his gun across him he ran to the house and gave the alarm.
Charles Sanders living on an adjoining farm and other neighbors ran to the spot. Ostrander was quite dead, and his brains had oozed out on the ground through a fearful wound under the right ear. Doctor A. E. Willard was quickly summoned and the lifeless body was removed to the house. Doctor Willard after a brief examination pronounced it a case of accident. The hole beneath the ear was over an inch in diameter and the wound extended obliquely clear up into the cerebrum. Death must have been absolutely instantaneous. From marks found on the wood pile the generally accepted theory is that in hastily gasping the weapon and drawing it up to him the hammers struck against a wood bolt and the moment the gun was freed from the obstruction a hammer fell and exploded the charge. The gun was very heavily charged, at least it is presumed so from the fact that when the other barrel which remained loaded after the accident was fired off the weapon kicked heavily. The deceased was 27 years of age, married but had no children. His sister Miss Belle Ostrander is teaching in the Idiot Asylum at Newark, N.Y., was at once telegraphed for.
The unfortunate Young man had been accustomed to the use of fire arms from his early youth up and it is not improbably that his familiarity with such weapons led him to neglect even ordinary precautions. The funeral will take place to-morrow.

W.H. Ostrander Passes. - Wilbur Hull Ostrander, a member of the firm of Ward
& Ostrander, local liverymen, died at his home in J. street at 10 o'clock
this morning from erysipelas after an illness of one week.
The deceased was born in Brownsville, Ore., February 18, 1859, being 53 years of age at the time of his death. Surviving are two sons, Raymond and Amos, age 20 and 16 years, respectively, a mother, Mrs. Mary C. Ostrander, aged 81 years, who is very ill at her home in Goldendale, three sisters, Mrs. Simeon Bolton of this city, Mrs. C.F. Fulton of Portland and Miss Anna Ostrander of Goldendale, and a brother, John W. Ostrander of Gold Beach, Ore.

Ostrander Funeral. - The funeral of W.H. Ostrander, who died yesterday was held this morning at the Crandall undertaking
parlors, Rev. M.J. Perdue of the Methodist church officiating. A quartette, composed of
F.C. Sexton, J.M. Fleming, Miss Bertha Willerton and Miss Evelyn Knox sang several selections at the services. Mrs. C.J. Bright was the accompanist. The
pallbearers were A.E. Lake, George C. Blakeley, W.A. Kirby, F.J. Knepper, J.C. Johnson and Peter Fleck. Interment was
made at the Odd Fellows' cemetery.

DEATH OF NATIVE OREGONIAN
Wilbur H. Ostrander, for many years a resident of this section, died at his home
in this city early Friday morning of erysipelas.
Mr. Ostrander was born February 18, 1859, at
Brownsville this state. In 1878 he removed to eastern Washington and owned and
cared for a large farm in the Klickitat hills near Goldendale. In 1889 he was
united in marriage to Miss Laura Colby of Ohio. To them were born two sons,
Raymond, aged 20 years and Amos, aged 16. Owing to the failing health of his
wife he changed locations several times, making his residence in Medford for
some time. They returned to this city some years ago; four years ago Mrs.
Ostrander succumbed to consumption. For more than a year and Mr. Ostrander has
been connected with the Ward & Ostrander livery business. He was a member of
the First Methodist church of this city. The deceased is survived by his sons,
an aged mother living at Goldendale who has lately been critically ill, three
sisters, Mrs. Simeon Bolton, The Dalles; Mrs. C.F. Fulton, Portland; Miss Anna
Ostrander, Goldendale and a brother, John W. Ostrander of Gold Beach.
Funeral services were held Saturday morning, April 20,
at 10 o'clock at the Crandall Undertaking parlors, Rev. N.J. Perdue of the
Methodist church officiating. Mr. and Mrs. Amos Colby of Goldendale and Miss
Eunice Donnell of Portland were relatives from away in attendance at the
services. Interment was made in the I.O.O.F. cemetery.

John Snyder, father of ex-Supervisor Snyder, of the Fifteenth Ward, and William Ostrander, of the Thirteenth Ward, old residents of the Eastern District, died Wednesday. Mr. Snyder..... Mr. Ostrander was in his fifty-sixth year, and had lived in that section a quarter of a century. He had been in the trucking business and amassed a fortune. EXECUTION OF W. H. OSTRANDER --
Shocking Scene at Utica, N. Y., This Morning --
Utica, N. Y., August 10.
William Henry Ostrander was hanged here at 10:36 o'clock this morning for the murder of his brother, George Lyman Ostrander, December 26, 1880, near West Camden. When upon the scaffold he did not want anyone to pray for him. Prayer was offered, however, after which Ostrander spoke for three or four minutes in a rambling manner, claiming his innocence, saying that he had not had a fair trial and denouncing the people for hanging him. He was frequently profane and obscene and ended by saying with an oath: "But as to hanging me you can do it. Life is of no good to me." He was pronounced dead in twelve minutes. His neck was not broken by the fall. Before the execution he told his spiritual adviser that he did not forgive his relatives and would not ask God to forgive him.

Ostrander, who suffered upon the gallows on Friday for the murder of his brother, was a man so hardened a type as to create a very general impression that he was insane. Governor Cleveland appointed a commission composed of three eminent physicians, to examine into the condition of his mind. They reported unamimously that he was sane, and thereupon the authorities proceeded to carry out the sentence of the court. During his last hours two clergymen attended him. One of them was a Methodist and the other of the Roman Catholic persuasion. He refused to confess his sins to the priest, and he declined to humble himself, at the request of the Methodist minister, before his Maker. Neither to God nor to man would he express contrition. When assured that in confession lay his only hope of salvation, he scoffingly replied, "Well, then, I guess "I'll worry along just as I am." His obduracy was invincible, and he died with blasphemous words upon his lips. A nature like this would be easily capable of the crime for which Ostrander was condemned. He slew his brother without the shadow of a provocation, and simply to gratify the rancor of a soul possessed of the devil. His mother and sister were the chief witnesses against him. They subsequently made an attempt to save his life by qualifying their evidence. Had they succeeded a creature would have been restored to society who sooner or later would have reached his natural destination -- the gallows.
